Types of Migraines

There are several types of migraine headaches. The first is called migraine without aura. The most common of the many types of migraines, sufferers of this headache may also experience other forms of migraine, usually migraine with aura. This type of attack can last anywhere from 4-72 hours. You may experience unilateral location, pulsating, and moderate or severe intensity with this migraine. It can be aggravated by physical activity and may be accompanied by nausea and/or photophobia and phonophobia.

Of the known types of migraines, migraine with aura is the second most common. This type of migraine is defined as a recurrent disorder that manifests itself in attacks of reversible focal neurological symptoms, which arise slowly over a 5-20 minute period. Generally, types of migraines such as this one have initial symptoms that last less than 60 minutes, until the onset of the headache, which carries the same symptoms as migraine without aura. Sometimes the aura may not lead to a migraine, and become a normal tension headache.

The types of migraines you experience may differ from other migraine sufferers. A basilar type migraine is another type of migraine – it used to be called a basilar artery migraine. This type of migraine is very uncommon, and is associated with brainstem dysfunction. Serious attacks of this migraine may lead to stroke, coma, or even death.

Familial hemiplegic migraines are a type of migraine that may have a genetic component. These migraines last from 4-72 hours and are thought to be caused by ion channel mutations.

An acephalgic migraine is a type of migraine categorized as a neurological syndrome. A variation of the most common types of migraines, it includes aura symptoms such as; scintillating scotoma, nausea, photophobia, and hemiparesis, as well as other symptoms commonly associated with different types of migraines. The difference from other types of migraines is that no headache manifests in addition to these symptoms. This migraine is also called an amigrainous migraine, ocular migraine, and optical migraine.
